Sausage Party Foodtopia: Seth Rogen's Adult Food Fight Movie Gets a TV Spinoff

Seth Rogen has confirmed an upcoming spin-off to the 2016 animated adult comedy, Sausage Party!

Sausage Party takes place in a supermarket inhabited by anthropomorphic foods and products representing various demographics. One of these products, a sausage named Frank, discovers the horrifying truth of what happens to food taken to “the Great Beyond”, the world outside the supermarket. With the help of his companions, Frank seeks to prevent this fate while a literal shower vows to destroy him.

Sausage Party was a collaborative production between Columbia Pictures, Annapurna Pictures, Point Gray Pictures, and Nitrogen Studios. The film was co-directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, both of whom later co-directed The Addams Family (2019) and its sequel. The all-star cast consisted of names such as Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, Salma Hayek, Edward Norton, David Krumholtz, Nick Kroll, Jonah Hill, and many more.

A Course of Coarse Comedy

Besides providing the voice for Frank, Rogen also worked on the story and screenplay. He developed the idea for eight years, with most studios being skeptical about the potential for an adult animated feature film. (Contrary to popular belief and marketing, Sausage Party is NOT the first adult animated feature nor the first R-rated computer-animated one.) The concept gradually evolved to become a deconstructive parody of Veggie Tales along with family-friendly features from the likes of Disney and Pixar.

Sausage Party was released in US cinemas on August 16, 2016, earning $141.3 million against a $19 million budget. It was the highest-grossing R-rated animated film at the time before being surpassed by the 2020 anime film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. Sausage Party received generally positive reviews for its humor and writing.

Aside from its raunchy, provocative content, one of the major controversies of Sausage Party was regarding the poor treatment of animators at Nitrogen Studios. Tiernan coerced them to work overtime for free, lest they end up blacklisted. As a result of the disagreeable working conditions, 36 out of 83 animators were left uncredited. It was not until late March 2019 that the animators were entitled to receive overtime pay for their work on the film.

Sausage Party Serves Up Sloppy Seconds

Rogen had previously expressed interest in making a sequel to Sausage Party. It was the first time that one of the films he worked on had a sequel hook, and he had ideas for future adult animated features. He hopes that Sausage Party and its follow-ups become successful enough to justify making more R-rated animations.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia is arriving on Amazon Prime Video, set for release sometime in 2024. The first season will consist of 8 episodes, while the storyline is currently “under wrappers”. With how the original film ended, the new series might employ some meta-humor on top of the adult comedy.

Of the returning cast, Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, Edward Norton, and David Krumholtz are confirmed to reprise their roles. New cast members include Will Forte, Sam Richardson, Natasha Rothwell, and Yassir Lester. Although other key actors such as Salma Hayek, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, James Franco, and Danny McBride are not listed, there is a possibility that they may make their return.
